If you hold appreciated assets—such as stocks, bonds, or mutual funds—donating them directly to a qualified charity like a church
can be a highly tax-efficient way to give.

When you donate appreciated securities that is held long-term (held more than one year):
-
You avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciation.
-
You may still deduct the full fair market value of the asset as a charitable contribution, subject to IRS limits (generally up to 30% of your AGI for gifts of appreciated property to public charities).
To qualify for these benefits:
-
The donation must be made directly to the charity (do not sell first).
-
The asset must be publicly traded or otherwise properly valued.
Please email treasuer@gefcsf.org to request DTC receiving instructions
if you choose this donation method.
